Summary

Paneer Bhurji is a quick, flavorful, and protein-rich Indian dish made with crumbled paneer (Indian cottage cheese) cooked with onions, tomatoes, and aromatic spices. It’s a versatile dish that can be enjoyed as a breakfast, lunch, or dinner option, often served with roti, paratha, or toast.

Ingredients

  • 200g paneer, crumbled
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 medium tomato, finely chopped
  • 1 green chili, finely chopped (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 inch ginger, finely grated
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1/4 teaspoon kasuri methi (dried fenugreek leaves) – optional
  • 1 tablespoon oil or butter
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Prepare the Paneer: Crumble the paneer using your hands or a fork. Set aside.

Temper the Spices: Heat oil or butter in a pan over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.

Cook the Aromatics: Add finely chopped onions and sauté until they turn translucent. Then, add grated ginger and green chili, and sauté for another minute.

Add Tomatoes and Spices: Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they soften. Stir in turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well.

Incorporate Paneer: Add the crumbled paneer to the pan and mix gently to coat it with the spice mixture. Cook for 2-3 minutes on low heat.

Finish with Garam Masala and Kasuri Methi: Sprinkle garam masala and kasuri methi (if using). Stir well and cook for another minute.

Garnish and Serve: Turn off the heat and garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves. Serve hot with roti, paratha, or toast.

Additional tips

  • For a creamier texture, you can add a splash of cream or milk while cooking the paneer.
  • If you prefer a spicier version, increase the amount of green chili or red chili powder.
  • To make it healthier, use minimal oil or substitute with ghee for a richer flavor.
  • You can add finely chopped capsicum (bell peppers) or peas for added texture and nutrition.
  • Always use fresh paneer for the best taste and texture.

Enjoy your delicious Paneer Bhurji!
